Thurisaz - The Meanings of the Runes

Thurisaz, the third letter in the Elder Futhark alphabet, is known as "the thorn of Thor". Like all the other runes, this can be symbolically interpreted in a few different ways. The Norse and Anglo-Saxons viewed this rune as dangerous: thorns prick, cut, injure. However, in ancient cultures, thorns had practical applications as well. Consider a bramble bush grown as a barrier of protection.

Some believe this rune represents Thor and his hammer, which is a weapon but can be used offensively as well as defensively for protection. Others view this rune as meaning something more along the lines of a thorn in Thor's side, which would relate it to the monsters that he battled. In fact the word "thurs" designates a supernatural entity, typically a monstrous one.

It represents jumping into action, potency, raw power, strength, rage, chaotic elemental forces. In mythology, there are a number of examples of Thor losing his temper or losing control. These aspects again show thurisaz as being a force that can either injure or protect and should therefore be handled with caution.

Thurisaz is, after all, a rune of duality: it represents both Thor as well as the monsters that he fought. Thurisaz has a touch of the unpredictable.
